Winter Storm Brings Avalanche Warnings to Listening Area

(Dec 28, 2022) The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) has issued an Avalanche Warning covering large portions of the KRKQ listening area.

According to the CAIC, “An Avalanche Warning is in effect for the Park Range, Elkhead Mountains, Flat Top Mountains, Grand and Battlements Mesas, Thompson Divide, Elk Mountains, San Juan Mountains, Ophir, and Lizard Head Pass from Tuesday evening through Thursday morning. Heavy snowfall and strong winds are creating very dangerous avalanche conditions. Expect widespread avalanche activity large enough to bury or kill a person. Some avalanches will release spontaneously. Travel in backcountry avalanche terrain is not recommended.”
